Srinagar, Jun 25 (KNO): In a major boost to rail connectivity in Kashmir, Northern Railways Jammu Division has approved an increase in the maximum permissible speed of trains on the Banihal–Qazigund single-line electrified section from 75 km/h to 100 km/h. In a statement issued to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Northern Railway's Jammu Division said the decision marks a significant step towards improving railway operations and passenger services in the Valley. It said the increase in speed on the 17-kilometre Banihal–Qazigund stretch will lead to a reduction in train running time, enabling faster movement of trains and improving overall operational efficiency. The division said the enhanced speed will also increase line capacity and provide additional time for maintenance activities, thereby contributing to safer train operations and quicker clearance of tracks for other services. According to the statement, the move is expected to improve the punctuality of trains operating up to Qazigund, Anantnag and Srinagar, reducing delays and ensuring a more reliable travel experience for commuters. The railway authorities said the speed enhancement is not only aimed at saving travel time but will also contribute to the socio-economic development of the Kashmir Valley by strengthening transport infrastructure and improving connectivity. Reiterating its commitment to passenger welfare, Northern Railway said it remains focused on providing safe, fast and comfortable travel facilities to the public. The division also appealed to passengers to follow all safety instructions during travel and cooperate in safeguarding railway property—(KNO)
